As I briefly mentioned before, I’m participating in this year’s Designer Showcase at the Columbus, Museum of Art and I’m very excited about it.  I’m creating the Guest Bedroom Suite and I couldn’t be more pleased with the design I came up with.  I wanted to create a bedroom that felt casually elegant with a livable sophistication where guests felt comfortable and at ease.  The color scheme I chose- green, taupe, gray, and a bit of pink here and there, is coincidentally suitable to welcome Spring.

My inspiration came from the desire of having a bedroom which can provide guests everything they need during their stay.  From a sitting area where they can read or enjoy a drink, a desk where they can do some work or write a note, to of course a comfortable bed with luxury bedding where they can enjoy a good sleep.  The overall aesthetic of the bedroom is ingrained with classic lines and a modern sensibility that reflects my Chic Comfortable Spaces signature style.

All proceeds support Wonder School and other creative initiatives.  To learn more about 2019 Designer Showcase, please visit the Columbus Museum of Art.

Using the same fabric for walls and furniture may sound old school; however, when interpreted in modern ways, it can be timeless while up-to-date.  Besides being aesthetically beautiful, there are many other benefits of doing this.  From making a room feel more spacious, to more harmonious to even more artistic, using the same fabric or pattern- sometimes in the form of wallpaper for the walls and fabric for the furniture, can indeed enhance any space.  See for yourself below a list of good reasons why it is a design element worth trying.

It Makes The Room Feel Spacious

biscuit bedding

I would say that the ultimate luxury is to have a full night sleep, furthermore, to sleep in a bed with soft, luxurious, and beautiful bedding.  I first learned about Biscuit bedding when I saw the chic bedding at AD just recently.  I couldn’t help but love the brand’s modern take on the traditional.  In 2012 Bailey McCarthy realized through her design work that there was a lack of heirloom quality bedding for her generation. She created Biscuit as a brand that would fill this space by designing and selling luxury bedding with fun designer prints, keeping the process rooted in the tradition of the south and manufactured in the USA.

The canopy bed is custom-made by Carole Gratale.

This glamorous bedroom designed by Michael S. Smith, one of my favorite designers, is a product of a long-term relationship between clients and Interior Designer.  Smith has designed more than 12 residences for the homeowners in the span of 25 years.  After a five year long renovation, which involved joining two previously separate apartments, the result is a beauty in every form with a mixture of refined old world and modernity.  The interior design in the bedroom, as well as in the rest of the house is out of the box and without matchy-matchy.  “ There are many high points, but not everything is at full volume.  Overall, the apartment is serene and quiet, not jumpy.” Michael S. Smith.  You can see the rest of this spectacular home at Architectural Digest.

Gray is one of the colors that offers neutrality while adding color…  Whether it is dark or light, with beige or blue undertones, gray is among the most beautiful colors there is.  It’s super versatile as well because it is a color that can be used either in modern or traditional design.  Gray bedrooms with accents of gold throughout provide a modern and glamorous look.  For a more classic look, gray bedrooms with a mixture of black accessories would be ideal.  Gray-hued wall paints are among the favorites of designers…  No wonder that many, myself included call gray the new black… And let’s not forget the coziness and warmness it can create when used as a color option for a seagrass wallpaper…

I love how soothing and romantic this room is… the different tones of gray mixed with silver, browns, blacks, pink flowers and antique mirror is what a stylish doctor would recommend for a romantic bedroom…

To many people, the thought of a canopy bed would give them the creeps. Not to blame them if the first image that easily slips into our minds is a frightening postcard from The Jacobean period style.  A heavily carved gilded bed with a heavy cornice, swags hanging from the canopy and so much fabric enclosing you is for sure a recipe for rhinitis.  Today’s canopy beds couldn’t be farther from that and you don’t need a four-poster bed to create one.  Anyone with a regular bed can build one with curtain rods and fabric securely hanging from the ceiling.  Check out YouTube for some cool tutorials or head over to Lonny Magazine where Michelle Adams documents how she made hers.

Whichever way you decide to make one, a canopy over the bed is one of the most romantic ways to decorate your bedroom.  The design of Modern Canopy Beds nowadays is a far cry from the times of its origins.  Back then, the design of the Four Poster beds was heavily carved dark wood and always enclosed with heave curtains. As life got easier and lighter with times so did the Canopy Bed hence their posters are slimmer with cleaner lines. They are easier to decorate with than many people think due to their unique dual design advantages. Surprisingly these particular beds can make a small room look taller and bigger while they also can complement beautifully bigger and higher ceiling bedrooms.

Four-poster beds also come in mirror for those looking for glam. Enjoy this round-up of modern canopy beds in case you are in the hunt for one and while you are it, take a look at the many canopy bed ideas.
