colorful modern home decor, black and white graphic tiles bathroom

I love it when I come across a home that is colorful, modern, and timeless at the same time.  Nowadays, when everything seems to be in black and white, it’s refreshing to see that there are still designers who dare to take a chance.  I love neutrals because they can’t go wrong; however, a colorful home is always uplifting.  Architect Carmel Greer created a home that is as personalized as it’s inviting.  Pink living room with contrasting upholstery, who doesn’t like pink? She kept the bathrooms and kitchen neutral and fresh while sprinkled the open spaces with modern and colorful art.

Often Designers and Architects use their own home as a laboratory by implementing design choices that clients usually reject.  Carmel told ED that she put in her own house things that clients haven’t really loved.  I’m sure that many clients, after seeing the result will change their minds.

Best rustic kitchen, Amber Interiors

From rustic to colorful, these are the 10 best kitchens of 2019.  As it is usually the case every year, there were many beautiful and functional kitchens, however, some of them really stood out from the rest.  I read somewhere that pewter and gunmetal finishes were predicted to be trends this year, yet we didn’t get to see many of them.  As you’ll see in most of these popular kitchens, brass fixtures are still reigning sovereignty.

This colorful kitchen is small but it’s full of style and substance, plenty of storage, stone floor, and the right-sized island.  The brass hardware and fixtures work as a jewel against the blue cabinets- design by Heidi Caillier.

I imagine that if I were to live in the countryside and owned a couple of horses this would be the kitchen I wanted.  This country-style kitchen has a great balance between rustic and refinement.  The detail of the baskets below the metal island softens up the brick floor.  The home of Jacques Erasmus.

I don’t wake up until I get to have my espresso in the morning.  My coffee station in my kitchen is my sanctuary hence, besides having all the props to prep my coffee without having to move one step, I make sure there is always something pretty to make me smile in the mornings.  Complementary things such as flowers, ceramics, or a beautiful decorative sugar jar are a few of my favorite details to make my coffee station more motivational.

kitchen trend for 2019, half wall backsplash

As much as I don’t guide my design choices by trends, it’s important to stay abreast of them.  Especially, kitchen trends, because we all know that kitchens are the center of the home.  That’s where we go in the morning to have our coffee, to prep our kids’ breakfast and on occasions to cook for friends.  The best about this 2019 kitchen trend is that it’s a classic revival, yes you read that right.  These are the kinds of trends I like, those that won’t feel outdated in a few years.  Afterall every design choice we put into our kitchen is an investment, and they can’t be taken lightly.

Modern country kitchen remodel, Julie Paulino Design

When I asked my client what atmosphere was she looking to feel after this kitchen renovation, her response was, “I want something that feels more like a cottage,” I instantly loved the idea.  I loved the fact that she wasn’t looking for a pretentious looking kitchen which would’ve been in complete disharmony with the rest of her home.  It all started with a hand sketch of my vision, which she immediately fell in love with.  We stayed away from white kitchen cabinets and instead went with semi custom-made grey distressed finish ones.  For more of a country feel we chose beaded cabinet doors — Interior Design by Julie Paulino Design.

My client has other homes around the country, and she hardly uses this kitchen, so we were able to ditch some of the upper cabinets.  That last option made the kitchen feel grander and brighter.  For contrast, we chose hand-made glazed white subway tiles, which also add great texture to the walls.  Below, are three computer renderings that we provide our clients once the design is agreed.  Further down, a before picture of the old kitchen.
