This penthouse in Greenwich Village, New York has all the details of a jewel box with the exception of the jewel tones. Well perhaps you can see one or two. The inspiration for this glamorous and elegant apartment was two chairs but specifically two beige chairs that Interior Designer and Architect Rafael de Cardenas found in Basel, Switzerland. The owner is a London born who moved to New York and whose taste is obviously urban and sophisticated. Although the apartment had been redone previously and was in good shape, Cardenas and its owner decided to make it even better and more appealing to its owner’s taste. Walls were moved and every surface was refinished. The color scheme throughout the apartment is mainly composed of neutrals with lots of pretty details and different metal finishes. Metals such as brass, bronze and steel work as jewelry accessories against the blond-wood herringbone floors and the travertine fireplace. The fireplace has a glamorous brass mantel… or is that painted to look like brass. Either way it creates an alluring effect.

Brown and blue is a combination that I have always favored.  The day bed is custom-designed by Rafael de Cardenas, the lamps are by Jean Royere.

I love it when I go to the Super market and come across something I’ve never heard of before and the next thing I know it becomes my favorite thing.  I learned that from my husband actually.  He always comes with something really interesting to try.  These are some of my favorite things I’ve come across lately.  Below, 5 favorites of Belle Vivir for this month.  The one I’m most excited about is the book Versailles, A Private Invitation.

I read about this book at AD and immediately knew I wanted to buy it.  Who wouldn’t want a private tour of one of the most impressive and most visited palaces in France…The book Versailles, A Private Invitation by Guillaume Picon with photos of Francis Hammond grants access to the beautiful interiors of Versailles without photobombs obstructing your view.   A must addition to any stylish library.

Bavaria is a state on the Southeastern part of Germany.  The beautiful city of Munich is the Capital of Bavaria and its surrounding charming areas.  I am not referring to the traditional Bavarian way of dressing, Dirndl which many young women wear during Oktoberfest and in many cases on the weekends, and yes, in public.  Lol.  Rather I will refer to the way modern Bavarian women or Munchenerin, dress on a daily basis to run errands while riding their bikes.  Yes it really is as idyllic as it sounds and yes this is as modern as they would dare to go.  I know that in the US this would be considered Classic.  I really enjoyed living in Munich and got the pleasure of meeting many modern, welcoming and sweet Muncheners and they all shared the same characteristics of dressing.  Bavarian women have a very classic and understated way of dressing.  They smartly avoid trends and prints and love an Isabel Marant anything.  They keep the color quantity under three which derive only from neutrals.  Black, white, camel, browns and greys are among their favorites.  Just as Christian Dior suggests.   Although when it comes to color use, Bavarians would prefer dark colors like dark oranges, dark greens and burgundy.  Here is my take on how modern Bavarian women dress and the best fashion pieces to follow suit.

The Chanel Haute Couture Spring 2018 show on Tuesday made it difficult for those who love beauty, a.k.a. you and I, to decide what was more beautiful… the setting or the fashion. The show took place at the Grand Palais and the decoration was inspired by French Formal Gardens.  A spectacular and delightful setting with English roses climbing trellis and pergolas, sandy pathways and a charming fountain. The fashion was as beautiful as always.

Although a white plaster chandelier is very au courant and very frequently used lately, it’s far from being a trend.  It would actually be quite silly to think otherwise.  These chalky white plaster chandeliers or plaster home accessories have been around for quite some time perhaps as back as 1930’s when Alberto Giacometti brought the material into fashion in Paris.  The plaster lightings we see today are mostly inspired by Giacometti’s work.  With the help of his brother Diego, Alberto created beautiful and understated home accessories made out of plaster and or bronze.  Giacometti created various kinds of home accessories from table lamps, sconces and fireplace mantles in plaster.  Often creating pieces commissioned by Jean-Michel Frank who used a lot of white and plaster in his interiors.  Another great reminder of the use of plaster in interiors is perhaps the most recognizable of all Serge Roche.  He created objects in stucco or mirror which were heavily influenced by the Baroque.  Roche’s iconic designs are regarded as one of the most recognizable ones of the 20’s 30’s and 40’s style.  A more recent reference to this classically modern use of plaster in home accessories would be the work of John Dickinson.  The very acclaimed late American designer from the 60’s and 70’s who created collectable whimsical plaster furniture pieces.  One of his very recognizable and coveted pieces is the African table, a great modern interpretation of the original African stool.

As beautiful as these plaster accessories are, they also evoke a sense of whimsy and fun.  The imperfect finish of the plaster provides these rooms with a more relaxed atmosphere, which is perfect for our modern days.  Room above by Jeffrey Bilhuber via AD.  The white plaster chandelier was custom.

I like pink, especially that tone of pink that is subtle and goes great with darker tones as taupe, browns and greens.  Most of these pink pieces listed here are on sale, others like the home accessories are vintage.  Who doesn’t love a good sale…

The charming Italian Modern brass and enamel sconce is pretty chic and it’s vintage which makes it more valuable.  Who doesn’t always need more bow blouses, this costume silk shirt in a light pink would go great with brown pants.  Love this dress my Lisa Marie Fernandez.  A chic velvety shoulder bag.  Isn’t this pair of woven willow glass wine bottles super chic to use as decorative objects.  Pink boots for when there is no snow outside.  Pink pants.  Pretty pillow because it’s good to change things up a bit once in a while and there is no easier way to do it than with pillow.  Modern classic chairs, set of 4.  And last but not least this modern-style pink sofa is not only pretty but it’s on sale also.
