Month: May 2018

After Memorial Day weekend it is ”officially” summer.  White clothes are allowed, and sunscreens are but an everyday essential.  While all that is great, the most exciting part of the summer is spending time away at our favorite summer destinations where everyone smells like sunscreen.  When I saw this SoCal beach bungalow with a very California cozy style, my first thought was how great it would be to own a beach cottage where to spend the long summer weekends.  As this charming 480 SF bungalow proves, charm and coziness have nothing to do with space, so it won’t need to be that big as long as it has plenty of windows where light can come in, cozy outdoor spaces and a light palette indoor.

10 Ways to Increase Your Happiness

We all have different goals… priorities in life, thank God!  However, there is one common purpose, call it motivation if you will.  I’m referring to happiness.  In the end, we all want either the things or acts that create our happiness.  What if instead of chasing happiness we choose it by accepting what we can’t change, loving who we are, embracing others and stop waiting for the perfect situation that is going to bring us happiness?  It’s not about forgetting our dreams but all the opposite.  By embracing and accepting what we can’t change we become more focused on those things that we can achieve.  10 Ways to Increase Your Happiness is a great article to help us with that.

10 Ways to Increase Your Happiness

What you are today is the result of your habits.  At least that is what many subject matter professionals say, and the more I think about it, the more it makes sense.  This article points to a four-step process for making life-changing habits stick.  “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.”  Transform Your Life By Transforming Your Habits.

This weekend is Memorial Day Weekend, and we are leaving for New York for my niece’s graduation and other work-related meetings.   I’m signing off for the rest of the weekend and come back next Tuesday.  Happy Memorial Weekend!

If you are considering using patterned cement tiles in your home, whether as a kitchen backsplash or as floor tiles, in your bathroom, and are doubting whether or not cement tiles will stand the test of time.  It’s good to remember that few other tiles have been around for so long and still keep coming back strong every now and then.  They are super popular right now, especially in kitchens and bathrooms.  They quickly transform any blah room into a wow one.  Another excellent characteristic of cement tiles is that because they are handmade no two tiles look exactly the same.  This characteristic makes them authentic and gives them a feeling of originality.

There are so many patterns available by different manufacturers that is almost overwhelming.  I’m sharing a few sources at the bottom of this post.  Whatever patterned tile you decide on,
one thing to keep in mind is that you should follow installation instructions to the T, especially when it comes to the final sealing step.  Cement tiles are incredibly tricky, and they can be damaged very easily.  They can get stained, not precisely a beautiful patina and these ugly
stains are very difficult to fix.  Manufacturers are usually not responsible for any stain developed after improper installation because they stand behind the fact that due to the nature of the cement tiles being made by hand they are prepared to look imperfect.  The truth is that a beautiful patina on a tile is not exactly a stain, that’s why it’s so important to make sure that your installer is doing the installation correctly.

If you are installing them on the floor as in this beautiful bathroom above, make sure the floor is level; otherwise, the tiles can chip off with usage over time.  The chipping may be due to the way the tile is manufactured in sort of layering.   Another widespread use of encaustic tiles is on patio floors,  and they can look great in the right kind of architecture.

Who got up at 4 AM to watch the Royal wedding on Saturday?  I initially planned to get up at 5 AM but a random call from an unknown number luckily woke me up at 4 AM, and I couldn’t go back to sleep.  I made coffee, tuned to BBC, and listened to interviews with presidents of the many charities endorsed by Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex.  The wedding was as expected, a fairytale.  Meghan wore a very chic and modern wedding dress designed by British designer Clare Waight Keller for Givenchy.  The house’s first female artistic director.  I wonder if the Duchess of Sussex chose Clare as a nod to her advocacy for women’s equality.

“The Duchess and Ms. Waight Keller worked closely together on the design, epitomizing a timeless, minimal elegance referencing the codes of the iconic House of Givenchy.” @KesingtonRoyal.  The bride’s bouquet contained Princess Diana’s favorite flowers along with stems hand-picked by Harry from their private garden at Kensington Palace.  How sweet is that?  I loved the bride’s mom, how sweet and humble she looked.  You could see how emotional she was.  She was living the dream of many mothers around the world.

Today’s special deals of the week have an English accent for obvious reasons.

Clothing pieces on sale

The hot days are here which means it’s time to ditch the coats.  Whether we admit it or not that can be a bit intimidating especially because we all know that coats are not only good for the cold but also for cover-up sometimes.  So there is nowhere to hide, from now on it’s about the clothes we are wearing daily.  Now, we all might have a right amount of essential pieces in our closet to helps us navigate our regular daily schedules of office work and meetings, but don’t we all need our trophy items once in a while?  Would it be a meaningful life if we didn’t have those unnecessary clothing items that make us smile and be cheerful? Probably, but only knowing they are hanging pretty in our closets bring a wave of joy to our days.

Why not protect our iPhones with a fun, albeit not professional, cover, finally get the courage to wear a pair of red and white plaid pants, and add one more bag to our collection that will go well with almost anything.  The best part of all of this is that all these beautiful pieces are on sale.   Even if winter is over, it’s worth snatching a pair of Isabel Marant booties at 40 percent off.  There is also that pretty pink structural dress by Carven that looks great with almost every kind of shoe we won, also on sale.  Below, see eight unnecessary clothing pieces on sale this weekend.

I enjoy reading biographies and autobiography.  Getting a more intimate look at the life events that have contributed to shaping the present of that particular person can be very inspiring.  And one that’s going to be exciting to read it’s Meghan Markle’s biography American Princess: The Love Story of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry, by Leslie Carroll.  I was quite surprised to find out in this excerpt that at the age of eleven Meghan was already making a positive impact in the world.  “It was at that moment that I realized the magnitude of my actions.  At the age of eleven, I had created my small level of impact by standing up for equality.” Meghan Markle

Traveling abroad brings a world of excitement and expectation but taking road trips also has its fair share of adventure without the stress of flying.  We are planning a couple of road trips this year, so we may take a cue from The Year’s Best Road Trips in America.

If you are a coffee drinker, I am, and I don’t feel sorry about it and neither should you, at least not if your consumption is within the usual average one.  Here are Five Myths About Caffeine, my favorite of all is the fact that a serving of espresso coffee doesn’t have more caffeine than a regular cup of coffee.
