bucket bag streetstyle

Can I say the bucket bag is the most significant trend of the season?  Yes, I know it’s been around for the past year, nevertheless the bucket bag is still, considered a trend this year.  The reasons are obvious;  it’s a trendy bag that comes in all different shapes, fabrics, and texture to satisfy everyone.  The best part about the bucket bag is that they don’t get squishy because they are molded into its shape.  They are also very easy to wear with almost anything.

I’m confident that Interior Designer Celerie Kemble, whose prevailing style is Palm Beach Chic, would approve all these pieces on sale this week.  Think trellis either as wallpaper or as an actual wood framework, bold patterned upholstery, bright colorful fabrics, plaster chandeliers, rattan and some whimsical accessories that is the Palm Beach Chic style I’m referring to.  Even though not all interiors look the same in Palm Beach, take this more formal home designed by David Kleinberg as an example, the style most people are familiar with is the one that is bold and daring.  Often the color turquoise is combined with a bright green or orange.  Lots of sea elements as accessories, seagrass wallpaper or simply white walls make a great background to all these diverse elements to mingle together.

”Like  nautical style, its Northeastern counterpart, Palm Beach style embraces all aspects of sea life—but with a distinctly tropical spin. Shells and coral are often-spotted elements, but palm fronds and the stately peacock chair, which is making a major comeback since its Swinging ’60s heyday, take the look to a more exotic place”  One King Lane.  A bold and bright interior may not be liked by everyone, but that is the beauty of diversity that we can all like and love.  Below, a few palm beach inspired pieces on sale…

An ottoman table that separates into stools is not only comfortable but also convenient, upholster it in a bold pattern fabric and keep the sofa in one color.  A side lamp table with a chinois undertone which would look great with a blue and white lamp.  A blue and white pillow because it’s a beach house and a bed made of a combination of a woven natural material and wood.

March is when Women’s History Month is celebrated and hundreds of museums and National Museum of Women in the Arts are joining the third annual #5WomenArtist campaign.  “Can you Name five women artists?” The campaign is designed to spark conversation about gender parity in the arts.  Yes this issue is everywhere you guys.  This year’s campaign focuses on women artist of color.  Which gives me an excellent excuse to post the portrait of Michelle Obama painted by Amy Sherald.  If you are asking yourself why Michelle Obama’s portrait is in sort of a gray scale, there is a very interesting and historical explanation.  Interesting how art is so meaningful and deep and it can be so expressive once studied and explained.  Sherald’s technique is analyzed in detail here.

“(Girls and girls of color) will see an image of someone who looks like them hanging on the walls of this great American institution. … And I know the kind of impact that will have on their lives because I was one of those girls,” the former first lady said at the official unveiling.

Although a white plaster chandelier is very au courant and very frequently used lately, it’s far from being a trend.  It would actually be quite silly to think otherwise.  These chalky white plaster chandeliers or plaster home accessories have been around for quite some time perhaps as back as 1930’s when Alberto Giacometti brought the material into fashion in Paris.  The plaster lightings we see today are mostly inspired by Giacometti’s work.  With the help of his brother Diego, Alberto created beautiful and understated home accessories made out of plaster and or bronze.  Giacometti created various kinds of home accessories from table lamps, sconces and fireplace mantles in plaster.  Often creating pieces commissioned by Jean-Michel Frank who used a lot of white and plaster in his interiors.  Another great reminder of the use of plaster in interiors is perhaps the most recognizable of all Serge Roche.  He created objects in stucco or mirror which were heavily influenced by the Baroque.  Roche’s iconic designs are regarded as one of the most recognizable ones of the 20’s 30’s and 40’s style.  A more recent reference to this classically modern use of plaster in home accessories would be the work of John Dickinson.  The very acclaimed late American designer from the 60’s and 70’s who created collectable whimsical plaster furniture pieces.  One of his very recognizable and coveted pieces is the African table, a great modern interpretation of the original African stool.

As beautiful as these plaster accessories are, they also evoke a sense of whimsy and fun.  The imperfect finish of the plaster provides these rooms with a more relaxed atmosphere, which is perfect for our modern days.  Room above by Jeffrey Bilhuber via AD.  The white plaster chandelier was custom.
