August is a month with not much happening in the Cultural or Fashion scene.  This is the month when many people in Europe take their vacation.  Mayor cities like Paris become empty when their denizens take off to the plages or country side Perhaps something not too bad for a tourist that prefers to stroll the streets of Paris solo, like we did two summers ago.  In America, however there is no such thing as taking a month-long vacation… yet still we prefer to say outdoors and enjoy the warm weather as long as we can.

For those who still prefer to head inside during those very hot afternoons, here are a few interesting fashion and cultural events around the world available this month, from fashion to Arts, and to take a look at those events that are trailing from past months you can go here.

Yes, this is another post about wicker bags… I just realized that even when I had posted about the “it”bag of the season sporadically, I had yet to do a roundup of this chic summer wicker bag.  As I made a reference in this post, I added one of these charming bags to my collection to bring with me to our trip to Provence, which we’ve been enjoying for the past six days and I’ve been using my cute wicker bag almost daily.  We started in Saint Tropez where we spent four days and had a great time.  We’ve been visiting Provence for the past three years and it never gets old.  It’s always exiting and inspiring to visit.  Right now we are at Uzes for the first time, enjoying this charming little town for the past two days.  Tomorrow we’ll be visiting Villenueve-les-Avignon fleamarket to see what we can find for our new home and from there we’ll be on our way to Gordes where we are spending next wek.  I know that being in such a special place as Provence where every season is to be enjoyed to the fullest, a simple summer bag is what I will wear and enjoy the most.  Regardless of where your summer takes you or keeps you, a wicker bag will undoubtedly add that chic summer essential touch to any outfit…

Oversized art in a room is a great way to bring in the extra design details that your home may need.  An over scaled piece of wall art injects immediate architecture, personality and identity to a modern home.  Anything from a modern art option like a black and white photograph of a favorite icon to a traditional painting, here are 5 reasons why you need oversized art for your home.

It’s picnic season… the sun is setting down late and everyone wants to spend more time outside enjoying the pleasure of summer.  Among those summer pleasures is the old fashioned picnic.  Old school as it is, picnicking doesn’t need to be ordinary.  There is plenty of stylish tableware to make any picnic look like a royal feast… dining al fresco is ideal in every way but there’s something especially romantic and charming about picnics… I have rounded up the most stylish picnic tableware from ornate acrylic tumblers to melamine blue and white plates.

It’s summer and it should be enjoyed to the fullest a.k.a outdoors and perhaps enjoying one of these many public art installations and cultural events around the world taking place in your city.  We only get three months of Summer so let’s make good use of it.  In this month’s installment of Cultural Events to experience around the world, I’m mostly covering outdoor public installations, which are not only making Cities beautiful but they are mostly free to enjoy and inspire spectators.  Public art installations are one of my favorite things for many different reasons, apart from the ones stated above they are also a great way to burn some calories towards your daily goal and you won’t even notice.

Public Art Installation and Cultural Events Around The World

New York City

Bjorn Skaarup, Hippo Ballerina

Right across from The Lincoln Center is a whimsical outdoor sculpture by Danish artist Bjørn Okholm Skaarup.  The artist took inspiration for the 15-foot-high bronze sculpture from two different sources: a film and a painting.  Dante Park, W. 63rd St between Columbus Ave and Broadway,

Jenny Sabin Studio, Lumen

This installation at the MoMA PS1 courtyard is most likely the coolest installation in the City right now.  Made of one million yards of robotically woven fabric and stretching across the open air courtyard, the woven structure also changes over the course of the day, displaying color in sunlight and glowing after sundown.  Museum’s visitors are able to interact with Lumen, which reacts to heat, sunlight, and density of bodies in its immediate environment.

The Netherlands:  De Stijl One Hundred Years Celebration

De Stijl, “the style” in Dutch, was an artistic period born in The Netherlands in 1917.  The movement’s ideology is one of Universal Unification.  The artistic proposition of De Stijl is simplicity and abstraction in asymmetric rectangular and square planes where the only colors used were the primary colors, commonly red, yellow, black.  Cubism.
The Artistic Period’s centenary is celebrated throughout The Netherlands with many Museum exhibitions.  More information here.
