Away from the hustle and bustle of the South of France’s sunny cost line you will find Uzès. A historic town located in Le Gard, a geographical Department in the South of France. Uzes is an enchanting hilly old town which is entirely pedestrian. We recently had the pleasure of spending a few days in this charming region and we had a great time. The town wasn’t always as chic and charming as it is today. Fifty years ago Uzès was a sad forgotten town with dilapidated and ruined homes until the French government took matters in their own hands and took the town under a major restoration. Uzes has recently been designated a historic town. In the center of tow is Place aux Herbes, a square featuring a big fountain, outdoor cafes and cute little shops. Almost every building in Uzes is of Renaissance architecture made of limestone.
We stayed at La Madison d’Uzes, one of the many recently renovated buildings. We did the usual touristic activities, visited museums and gardens, walked a lot, drank Rose all while enjoying street performers with classical instruments. There is a medieval garden inside the walled precincts from the 12th-century that is truly unique. The town’s main tourism is mainly composed of local or National tourists because wherever we were we only overheard French speakers. As a matter of fact many restaurants don’t have workers that speak English, so make sure you are prepared. One of the highlights of visiting Uzes was our visit to The Pont du Gard. A Roman aqueduct which was built to provide water to the close by towns. The architectonic site with impressive arches crossing the River Gardo is a must see. It’s also an excellent way of on-site education for children. There is a tour that takes you inside the aqueduct and walks you trough to the other side of the river. My husband and our son did that, I didn’t have the courage since I’m a bit claustrophobic.
Where to stay
La Maison d’Uzes. Situated in a 17th-century hotel Particulier, each room exhibits a different design. Our room was very spacious with a living room, a bedroom overlooking the beautiful town… a washing room with a bathtub and a separate shower room. The hotel has a Spa by L’Occitane and cozy courtyard where breakfast and diner as well is served. You can also choose to have your breakfast in the room if you wish. www.lamaisonduzes.fr
L’Artemise Also the name of the restaurant this hotel is 15 minutes walking from town. It also have a house that they rent in full. www.lartemise.fr
What to do
Walk around town and enjoy the beautiful light-colored stone buildings. Sit at one of the cafes around the Place aux Herbes.
Visit Chateau des Ducs d’Uzes, a private property but open to visitors.
Pay a visit to the Saint-Theodore Cathedral, it’s not as glamorous as many cathedrals around Europe due to its many enduring wars.
Walk up the Fenestrelle Tower, a similar take of the Tower of Pisa.
Get to walk a medieval garden at a walled precinct from the 12th century.
If you are in town during Wednesday or Saturday don’t miss the Market that takes place in the square.
Don’t forget to visit the Roman aqueduct, about 15 minutes drive outside of town.
Where to dine and drink
La Table d’Uzès. The gourmet restaurant of La Madison d’Uzes has one star in the Michelin Guide. Every week the menu changes, all prepared with fresh and seasonal produce. The patio is super charming. Our son enjoyed a super soft bull from La Camargue from the Meat menu. www.lamaisonduzes.fr.
Le Bec A Vin. One of the most quaint places un Uzes, this restaurant is rustic chic but the food is far from rustic. We had an excellent time in this cute little restaurant. www.lebecavin.com.
Ou Petit Jardin. A modern interior with a cozy courtyard, this restaurant serves really good food. We were lucky to find a table one of those nights when we didn’t scheduled anything and we were very pleased.
Place aux Herbes. Try any of the many cafes in the epicenter of town. Don’t forget to try the amazing ice cream. Or simply enjoy a glass of Rose or a cup of coffee while people watching. There are always Street performers playing a violin somewhere to make your experience even more pleasant.
