A Bright and Modern Victorian Home
You may have heard of the term Modern Victorian which is an Interior design style that aims to reinterpret Victorian style in a modern and au courant way. It may sound intimidating to buy a Victorian home because they have small, closed rooms with not much light coming in and as a result, they are not too inviting. However, challenging Victorian homes can be charming; they have a lot of character often embellished with exquisite woodwork and craftsmanship.
This period home in the west side of London was in a horrible condition when the owners bought it. The villa which previously was divided into six flats has been opened up and converted into a modern home. Glamorous cornices of the Victorian period were kept in the main floor throughout to maintain the character of the house. Even though the design of the home is on the modern side, there is a great balance between the glamour of the Victorian design style in the modern time. The exquisite interior design was done by Turner Pocock.
In the bright conservatory, above, lithographs by Andy Warhol and a modern tulip table juxtapose the ornate crown molding. One of the main requests from the owners was a big kitchen where friends and family to mingle.
The entrance hall or lobby was the only place in the modern home where the owners requested “all-out glamour” hence the black and white marble and limestone floor.
The dressing room is my favorite room in this house with its transitional modern design. The closet doors are covered in a de Gournay wallpaper, and the entire space is in a monochromatic grey palette
A tufted bed in the bedroom is a Victorian detail.
