The days are getting 2 minutes longer everyday.  I can notice it every late afternoon and that makes me so happy and excited.  Soon we’ll be ditching the heavy coats and boots and embracing lighter clothes… Just the thought of it is inspiring.  For now I would be content visiting one of these art exhibitions and fashion events during this month of February.

Often we complain about our political/social situation, failing to realize how powerful individual efforts are.  It’s easy to just be diplomatic and play it safe in order to not sabotage our own personal progress.  Such approach is not self rewarding to me and it’s certainly not going to help heal a country that needs so much healing after this last election…?  In a day as important as today, we all should feel compelled to reflect on how we can make a difference by helping those who are marginalized and treated less worthy?  Below, a list of present valuable causes to support.

We should educate ourselves and understand the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. — that a man should be judged by the content of his character not by the color of his skin.  Most importantly, support those organizations that are actually making a difference and fighting against injustice and inequality.  Here is a list of organizations that help with that fight alone with a very recent information that I have found deeply upsetting.

Black Infant Health Program and Souls of A Sister Reproductive Justice Institute

I was shocked to read an article in this month’s Parents Magazine that U.S. has the highest maternal-mortality rate among all industrialized countries in the world.  In California alone black infant mortality is 9.4 deaths per 1,000 births – a colossal difference from the white rate of 3.9.  Experts and professionals conclude that even when having the same level of medical care and even among highly educated affluent black mothers, African American women have the worst childbirth outcomes of any group in this country.  The reason for the disparity is even more alarming and perplexing and the conclusion is linked to our country’s complicated history with racism.  “It is absolutely plausible, scientifically, that the chronic stress of being treated unfairly or viewed unjustly because of one’s race- or even just worrying that this may occur- could cause physiological changes in a woman’s body that can in turn put her infant at a disadvantage”  Dr. Braveman told Parents Magazine.  Ongoing stress can lead to inflammation throughout the body which can weaken our immune system and as a consequence affect offspring.  Dr. Braveman went on to explain that this effect is called “allocastic load” which causes a breakdown of the body’s health preserving mechanisms.  A study in Journal of the National Medical Association found that black men and women have higher allocastic load scores than whites, which has led to an increase in premature death from chronic diseases.  It doesn’t matter who you are or how much money you have, recently Serena Williams who together with her beautiful baby daughter grace the cover of the current issue of Vogue recounts the scary days that followed her childbirth experience.  You can read the scary episode here.  Helping an organization that empowers disadvantaged mothers, regardless of their race is always a worthy cause.

American Civil Liberty Unions

Voter suppression is another embarrassing fact of this country.  State legislatures try to curb voting rights by creating more laws that make it more difficult to register to vote and curtail access to the ballot box.  But it’s of course been emboldened lately with baseless claims of voting fraud.  In reality what the status quo is trying to do is to prepare the path to enact new and harder laws to stop a certain social demographic from voting.  In a way to maintain the status quo.  Everyone should have the right to vote.  If you watched the Obama interview with David Letterman this past week, he explains this issue in his own quintessentially smart way.  Supporting organization that fight for basic civil rights is paramount.

Human Rights First

Human rights should in the forefront for any law creation or legislative action.

This last cause may not have to do with Civil Rights but it’s in keeping with helping one of the most important causes of modern history.  Global Warming is a fact.

Avoided Deforestation Partners and Greenpeace

This issue should be simply understood since it’s backed by so many scientific studies yet, many prefer to ignore the facts or come up with alternative facts which are mainly lies or fake news.  If we destroy our planet where will we go, what will we leave to our children or future generations?

January is the perfect month to visit Museums and indoor fairs.  Since it’s usually one of the coldest months of the year, we can take full advantage of the comfort of one of these indoor current exhibitions.  I have listed 6 great Museum exhibitions and fairs around the world that offer that and more.  From a notable look at the struggle of immigrants at the Howard Greenberg Gallery in New York City to the first exhibition of Charles I’s massive and impressive collection at The Royal Academy in London.

Oprah at the golden globes via belle vivir blog

The most talked about event this morning is the amazing and empowering speech Oprah gave last night at the Golden Globes.  She was awarded with the Cecil B. DeMille Award, the first African American woman to ever receive it.  About time.  #timesup.  What an extraordinary night of unity and empowerment for women of all walks of life.  When Oprah talks everyone listens… Her wisdom and eloquence is more than inspiring.  How amazing it was to hear her say:  “At this moment, there are some little girls watching as I become the first black woman to be given this award… I want all the girls watching to know:  A new day is on the horizon. When that new day finally dawns, it will be because of the magnificent women and many of them are in this room tonight.” The red carpet last night was not about naming and showcasing Designers, it was about showing solidarity to the women who started the #metoo movement as well as those others who don’t have a name but who are as equally important.  It was also about supporting fundraising for #timesup, a legal defense fund to fight sexual harassment.  All women wore a Time’s Up pin.

Not to sound like Oprah here but it truly is the ordinary things that make up for a big chunk of our happiness.  Simple and daily rituals are the ones that make a difference in our lives.  As I look forward to my morning espresso everyday… well I also look forward to my early afternoon one… I feel a sense of happiness and excitement.  It may or may not have to do with the fact that where I come from, an Island called DR, coffee is used as a social activity instead of a source of energy.  It’s not realistic to wish to enjoy every minute of our days because frankly who can be immune to the wrong things that affect us emotionally sometimes, but I think that learning to be grateful for the simple things it’s more than doable.  It can start with comparing our life today to our life five years ago.  Just recently I had a conversation with a very particular friend who was stacked repeating like a broken record that life doesn’t get better, until I asked him where were you five years ago?  What was your economical situation five years ago?  How was your family five years ago?… and so on.  His response was, well now that you say that, we are much better today, that’s true…. I’m sure that is the situation of many other people.  Life does get better every year in many ways and it helps to keep that in mind as often as we can.  Here is to the better next year, wishing you and your family many ordinary daily moments to look forward to.  From our Home to yours, Happy New Year!

One thing I love about innovative technology is the flexibility to stream shows at your own pace.  I watched the first season of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel created by Amy Sherman-Palladino and I can’t wait for the next one to be available.  According to The New York Times, the second season will happen since The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is the first show that Amazon has renewed based on the strength of the pilot along.  The show is enchanting, dreaming and inspiring, not to mention hilarious.  Rachel Brosnahan is Miriam “Midge” Maisel in the comedy show that is based in 1950’s New York.  Midge is a privileged upper West Side housewife who has lived a sheltered life, wears couture clothes and is a perfectionist.  She measures her entire body regularly to make sure she is not gaining any weight, wakes up in the middle of the night to take off her makeup and wakes up before her husband to put it back on so he doesn’t see her without make up.  Crazy, ah…? That’s until her husband Joel (Michael Zegen), a frustrated stand up comedian leaves Midge for his secretary.  She is forced to give up her gorgeous 50’s period apartment and goes with her two children to live with her parents, who live in the same building.  Both apartments, hers and her parents’ are designed to die for, showing the best of the 50’s decorations.

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel

The show starts with Midge giving the toast at her own wedding party, which is hilarious by the way.  She is a natural comedian, but the 50’s wasn’t suitable for women to have a voice of their own.  Not until she is left and heartbroken she realizes that she has a voice and decides to make it heard.  She finds an advocate in Susie Myerson (Alex Borstein) who becomes her manager.  I adore Susie’s character, her sarcastic personality is awakening.  Susie encourages Midge to start performing at a Greenwich Village club, the Gaslight Café.  Midge does her unprompted stand up shows while equally delighting and outraging the audience.  Let’s say that her type of comedy is very particular.  She makes fun of her own personal experiences instead of fabricating scenarios.  I can’t be more in love with Midge’s character.  She is gracious, lovely, energetic, positive and uber funny.  I just hope Amazon continues renewing it because the entire show is a delight to watch from the fashion to the interior decoration.  Oh, did I mention that Midge’s parents played by Tony Shalhoub and Marin Hinkle are two amusing individuals who will make you laugh by just watching their demeanor… Below, snippets of the interiors in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.
