We finally bought our home here in Dublin and the exciting stage is about to start soon.  Boy, I can’t  wait… The house as it is now is a complete disaster, which makes me somehow weirdly happy.  Every single surface, space and room needs to be redone, replaced or updated from floor to ceiling and windows… you name it.  So it’s safe to say that we won’t be moving anytime soon.  And you may be asking yourself what do all this have to do with two tone kitchens… Well if you know America’s obsession with white kitchens… I thought it would be a good idea to try to do something different while still beautiful.  And also because I just realized how much I’ve loved two tone kitchens for like ever…

I also realized that I favor kitchens that don’t necessarily look too much like traditional kitchens, if you know what I mean… absence of upper cabinets, furniture like islands and a more lounging atmosphere in general, etc….

Now don’t you fret… by two tone kitchens I mean a contrasting color on either lower cabinets, upper cabinets or island and it usually works out very well.

Not for everyone but contrasting colors in this kitchen are surely rewarding and unique.  Green and white…

If you have not seen at least one of the refined rooms designed by Rose Uniacke then you’ve been living under a rock. Her perfect balance between the raw and the refined has fashioned her a very acclaimed interior designer.  Uniacke studied philosophy and worked for a furniture-restoration workshop where she learned about antiques. The latter experience and the influence of her mother, an antiques dealer as well, honed her style and knowledge of antiques and she became an antiques dealer herself.  Good antiques, the right clients and her great sense of style, light and proportions marked the path for her renowned Interior Design firm. I posted about her kitchen a few years ago. The kitchen with high ceilings, the right amount of light and absence of upper cabinets was already beautifully understated but as many other designers do, Uniacke also keeps updating and changing things around her house. In February of this year Vogue magazine showed her London home in which the kitchen has a completely different look. I can’t think of a better place to experiment than our own homes… Rose actually renovated her entire house and converted the basement into a swimming pool, and a hamam… The house also has one of the most beautiful conservatories I’ve seen. The glass-roofed conservatory is the first room you see upon entering the house…marking the serenity found throughout the house…

In the previous kitchen there was an island, a more industrial stove and different overhead lighting.  In the latest version, the island was removed, the lighting was replaced and the stove is more modern.  Other details like the shelving and paintings were also changed…

Who hasn’t dreamed of owning a villa in the South of France… I know.  I have… Many. Times.  Or at least a modest home.  Frederik Fekkai’s vacation home in Provence is a paradise as he himself describes it to Architectural Digest where the home was featured last year.  The home, located in Aix-en-Provence where Fekkai was born and raised  is surrounded by olives trees, lavender bushes and cypress trees gracing the entrance… it also has an olive orchard on one side of the home.

I posted an apartment designed by Miguel Garcia del Valcarcer a few years ago and it’s pretty impressive how everything seems so au courant, see it here.  One more reason to love rooms with a mixed aesthetic.  I recently came across this bright and elegant apartment by him and couldn’t resist to post it.  The apartment is painted all white, a color that seems a favorite of Garcia, including the floors.  I personally would’ve preferred to see wood on the floor and maybe a bit more color, but for those who like to live in an all white home this home for sure is a good one to inspire…

During the glorious summer days, wicker and rattan are two of the things that come most to my mind.  There is something about this home designed by Luis Puerta that reminds me of those elements.  Perhaps it’s is the wood tone or the wicker accessories that Puerta uses throughout… The entire atmosphere in this home is very cozy and inviting…something about the decor gives it a glamorous vintage feel…A mixture of classic and modern furniture enhances the beautiful restored herringbone floors.

I really like the nostalgic feel in this living room.  I think that has a lot to do with the slip covered chair, the gorgeous herringbone floor, the antique framed wall mirrors and the stone fireplace.

About a mile away from Montauk Lighthouse is the idyllic cottage setting in a magical land overlooking the Atlantic.  The home is Daniel Romualdez’s charming Montauk home and if you read the article by Vanity Fair about the home you can see why so many fashionable people love the home and praise it.   The 17-acre property consists of three saltbox cottages from the 1930’s and everything in it resembles the easy living of beach lifestyle.  The decor is simple, elegant and a bit rustic… with traditional features and details.  Blue and white upholstering… A true charming and beautiful home…

On the profile I wrote about Daniel Romualdez as one of those Interior Designers to admire, I praise his ability to deliver consistent and multifaceted design, you can see the post here.  In the Vanity Fair article he says, “If you look at my portfolio, you’d think I’m sort of schizophrenic. I go from super-minimalist to super-colorful and layered, like Tory’s. I really enjoy working both ways. And I really believe you’re only as good as your client. I’ve learned so much from working with the stylish women that I do.”
