organic bugs killer, diatomaceous earth food grade

I’ve been postponing Five Favorites posts for a while, only because there are so many interesting products I’ve discovered and there is only a small amount of time I can invest on each post for the blog every day. I’ve been excessively busy with new clients and exciting new projects.  Here are my favorite products this month.

100% Freshwater Diatomaceous Earth: Organic Bugs Killer, Fertilizer, and Food

Organic Bugs Killer, diatomaceous earth food grade

Please bear with me as I try to explain what this diatomaceous earth is.  At the beginning of Summer, we were inundated with little ants. We would find them mostly in the kitchen around our sink, and it was very annoying. One day while browsing through Amazon I came across this organic bug killer powder that promised to be so safe you can even eat it, just don’t inhale it.  We bought it, mixed it with a bit of water and applied along the countertop with a syringe. The next morning when we woke up there only about five ants left and by the third day they were all gone.

This product can also be used to eliminate cockroaches, and it has 100 different uses from helping purify water to detoxifying the body. I have not used it for more than just killing my summer ants but if you want to read more about its many uses, visit 6 Proven Diatomaceous Earth Uses and Benefits. “Diatomaceous earth (DE) is essential for anyone looking for natural remedies in their home, yard, garden or homestead. This amazing product is made of tiny, fossilized diatoms (plankton) that accumulated over millennia in freshwater lakes.” Amazon

aperol spritz

I discovered Aperol Spritz a few years ago in Europe.  It was impossible to not notice it, from Verona to Munich everywhere I went I kept seeing the same orangy drink at outdoor cafes.  Aperol Spritz is indeed the favorite summer drink in Southern Europe.  If you’ve been paying attention, then you’ve noticed how the refreshing summer drink is taking over the US this summer.  Campari’s most famous cocktail is increasingly becoming a favorite drink here in America as well, and perhaps you may have already had a couple of glasses.  There is a reason you’re drinking so much Aperol Spritz.

I spent a day in Marseille last year but didn’t shop around besides purchasing a few preserves.  If you are planning a trip to the port city make sure to check out these 5 Places to Shop in Marseille first.

I’m not a vegetarian. I enjoy a burger too much.  Having said that I’m always on the lookout for inspiring healthy recipes.  I’ve been having my burgers without bread for years and occasionally replace the gluten-free bun with a portobello mushroom instead.  When I saw this creative way of making a pizza that looks like a burger I thought it would be interesting to share.  Grilled pizza portobellos with lemon-y cashew ricotta.  Tell me if that doesn’t sound good?

freezing ovaries for preserving fertility

freezing ovaries for preserving fertility

The thought of freezing ovaries for preserving fertility is mind-blowing.  There have been several success stories of women having children after retransplantation of their ovaries.  Ovary freezing is used most often to preserve fertility on cancer patients who don’t have time to freeze their eggs before undergoing chemotherapy.  The procedure has nearly a 40 percent global success rate.  Read more about it here.

I love to run.  I never thought I was going to be able to run since I was never an athletic child then I discovered that if I tried harder or alas push myself by running for 5 straight minutes the first week, 10 the next and so on, it could get myself to do it for straight 40 minutes.  I know that’s nothing for professional runners, but for me, that is enough.  And towards the end of those 40 minutes, my body lets me know it’s time to stop, so I listen.  I noticed that after I run I feel better in general, more relaxed but at the same time more excited, I feel more powerful and capable.  All mindfulness-based practices that make us concentrate on our breathing and being present can give us psychological and cognitive benefits.  I was happy when I came across this article about What Does Running Do To Your Brain.  It explains with scientific facts how running can improve the functioning of our general being.

And while you are there, working on your body while working on your brain, work some more and learn how to improve your memory, Science tells us the key.

I had very stylish links for today’s post, all linking to how to take care of your skin and other very interesting articles.  But as it happened, everywhere I went searching to complete the post, I found instead articles about the “zero-tolerance policy” that is separating children from their parents at the border.  I’m sure everyone’s heard of this horrific situation.  These children are supposedly kept in cage like spaces with no information about where their parents are or when will they see them again.  They find no comfort because they are told not to hug each other, the people supervising them can’t comfort them either.  “She was so traumatized that she wasn’t talking. She was just curled up in a little ball.”  Harpers Bazaar.

I can’t even imagine the state of desperation these families are going through.  Many of these parents are trying to save their children from the hands of gangs and street crime, from a future of violence or death.  We can all contribute to organizations that provide help to these families.  If you want to help these families, you can donate to organizations that advocate for migrant parents separated from their children, like UCLA,  Border Angels, Young Center and Kind.

The articles we are linking to this week are all about design and decorating somehow or another.  From How to set an elegant summer tablescape, we all can use some advice especially with Father’s Day coming soon, to 15+ Dining Rooms That Invite The Outdoor In.   If you instead celebrate traveling, we got you covered on that too with Where to Go and What to Wear this Summer.  And while you are there, traveling that is, here are 3 Travel-Worthy Art Museums Created by Women.   Happy reading!
