Beaverbrook Hotel in the Surrey Hills was recently designed by Susie Atkinson. She is the designer behind the fabulous interiors of the Soho House group, and she has really raised the bar for hotels all over the world. Beaverbrook hotel, named after a close friend of Winston Churchill, is located in a late-nineteenth-century mansion in the Surrey Hills. Lord Beaverbrook apparently threw many wild parties, and each room is now named after one of those guests. There is a Churchill suite as well. Susie’s goal was to design something essentially British and romantic. ‘I knew it had to be gentle, floral, and quirky with a touch of madness,’ H&G.
The property is under preservation rules so Susie had to be creative with the things she couldn’t change, for example, the purple marble fireplace, over-mantle mirror, and large parrot painting. Smartly, Susie decided to work with them and make the bar a Parrot Bar. House and Garden magazine describes the style of the hotel as “current but not trendy, comfortable and completely individual.” And I couldn’t agree more. The aesthetic of the hotel is modern enough with classic bones and details that make it feel timeless. Throughout the hotel you can find items from antique fairs and vintage shops, giving a little eccentricity to the otherwise immaculate decoration. The art of the unexpected is a trademark of Susie’s style.
