Tips on How to Maximize Space in Your Home from Around the Globe

Nowadays, space comes at a premium so, why waste the square footage you have with appliances and fixtures that you don’t really need.  Regardless of how small your apartment is or how large your mansion, we all like to maximize our space to make our homes spacious and welcoming.  The timeless bathroom design we featured on Belle Vivir is a classic example of streamline and timeless design, which maximizes space and doesn’t feel cluttered.  This is an example of what you should aim for in the rest of your home, from your bathroom to your kitchen and the bedrooms.  With that in mind, let’s have a look at some more tips to maximize the space in your home.

Maximize Light

One of the tenets of Scandinavian design is to maximize space and light as much as possible.  Since Nordic countries get very little light during the winter months, lighting is key. Use light, pale colors for your decor that will reflect light, and go for organic and natural materials like light-toned wood and hemp.

Additionally, placing a mirror opposite or next to a window will increase the amount of natural light that pours into the room.  Mirrors harness daylight and will effectively double up your light sources, so the bigger the mirror the brighter and larger space appears.  It will also make contrast less obvious and create sleeker, more decluttered lines.

Declutter your kitchen

For many years the best Australian architects have utilized curves in home design, which is used to maximize space in tight spaces and create a feeling of integration.  This design is now starting to filter into the mainstream market, particularly in kitchen design, creating sleeker more spacious looks.  Since it’s considered the ‘heart of the Australian home’, your kitchen is one of the busiest rooms in your house.  It should be able to enjoy cooking in it, making snacks and socializing, so it’s important that it at least appears spacious and decluttered.  Clever storage is an absolute necessity, and in an open-plan kitchen, thoughtfully designed storage like vertical shelving is used to hide and remove clutter.

Minimize your fixtures

Think about maximizing your space by using a combi-boiler as they use in the UK.  It will save you both space and energy.  While here in the US we have the luxury of space, even in dense urban centers (barring New York), space is at a premium in the UK in places like London, with every square meter costing a fortune.  In the UK many households prefer to keep heating systems as small as possible to maximize space.  So it is very common for households to have combi boilers that take up less room than traditional models. HomeServe explains how many households in the country up-date their boiler with a smaller model. This can then be easily concealed. As a result, a smaller boiler not only cuts down on the size of the fixture but also on the piping that is exposed for all to see.

Use stylish but efficient furniture

We could learn a thing or two from the elegant, yet minimalistic style of Japanese furniture and space design. The concept known as “Ma” is used to keep spaces clear and uncluttered, according to Impressive Interior Design.  The efficient use of space is a fundamental part of Japanese culture, and Japanese bedrooms are typically multi-functional rooms that maximize space.  So it is worth looking at designer Japanese furniture for your bedroom and then decorating it stylishly but sparingly.  Functional Japanese furniture works great for maximizing your space, like beds with drawers underneath or loft beds with room for a desk or wardrobe for the kids’ room.  Also look for lower bedframes and furniture designs that take up less space and give the impression the ceiling is higher, creating the illusion of more space.
