If French people are the best at creating laid-back eclectic spaces then Italians are the best in combining slick modern furniture with antiqued, elaborate architecture such as ancient villas and palaces, per se. These two homes, both in Torino, Piedmont, Italy, photographed by Adriano Bacchella illustrate that idea. Adriano Bacchella is an Italian photographer who has photographed luxury hotels and homes worldwide including the Fendi homes in Italy. I’m not sure if the first two images belong to Anna Fendi, but it’s referred to it as Anna’s in his website. Either way, I love how only the use of sculptural furniture don’t need much accessories, keeping the room uncluttered.

Below is a home also in Torino, Italy, that seems to be more of a model of Modern Italian decor. The coffered ceiling in the living room, the ornamental door frames and the patterned Italian floor juxtapose with the modern furniture and leather sofas. The modern art and lighting also help to unify the room.

A red Arne Jacobsen chair contrasts so well with the yellow walls and the mid-century Italian black leather chairs.

I love that floor lamp behind the left chair
modern rustic design

I first came familiar with the term nouveau-rustico while reading an article at a magazine referring to the new Italian restaurants Osterias, which, as a new trend, are offering a more home-made-Italian-style menu and I couldn’t help but associate the term and trend to what’s popping up in the home design world. After all food, fashion and decor are very much influenced by one another. This nouveau-rustico decor is a combination of matte surface wood, linen or some other organic textile with a good dose of glam (but one you can live long enough with) thrown in there resulting in a style that screams ” hey, I’ve been to some places, I’ve seen enough and I’m going back to basics without sacrificing style” Pierre Yovanovitch’s home in my previous post is an example of nouveau-rustico style. Because you can’t live in a lounge-like room every day. Below, a glimpse.

Pieree Yovanovitch interior design living room beam ceilings
While visiting the opening night preview gala of The Spring Show, I came across the work of Pierre Yovanovitch featured in a magazine given out to attendees.  The 2,150-square-foot house is located on the top floor of an Hotel Particulier in Paris.  Pierre Yovanovitch has been named by Architectural Digest as one of France’s most exiting young interior design talents.  Yovanovitch’s introduction to interior design was merely by chance when his friends asked him for help to decorate their homes while he was designing clothes for Pierre Cardin.  What I love most about his home is how he can combine comfort with rustic to a very polished result.

Pierre’s style is what Modern Magazine called sophisticated modernist and I couldn’t agree more. About his home he says “This is my interpretation of rustique chic

Pierre opted for a more bohemian approach for his dining area while still using mostly mid-century furniture. When friends come over, the sofas are pulled up to the Jules Wabbes’ table.

 classic wednesday white and blue

Very few color combinations is as classic as blue and white. A combination that has been used since the time of the Ottoman Empire and in places as exotic as Morocco, it’s been adopted by American Design since the longest time. Blue and white is a timeless combination of which one never gets tired, because as someone recently said: “it’s in nature.” That is probably why we never get bored of it. Below are a few images of white and blue rooms dating back as old as 1966 to prove it.

First and foremost I want to apologize to my very welcomed friends who comment on my blog. I mistakenly erased a bunch of comments through my dashboard and I feel awful because I know how much effort and time one puts on leaving comments on others blogs only for them to get erased. I hope I can restore them but it seems impossible. I wanted to make up big time for you so I did some heavy searching last night and I came across this more than spectacular Parisian flat featured in Cote Paris. All rooms share magnificent beam ceilings.  I’ve always admire how the French decorate in such a careless way and how it turns out in such perfection. I honestly think that French invented eclecticism. What’s your take? I promise I’ll preserve your comment this time.

liquide leather upholster

Lacquered furniture have been around for centuries but liquid leather as upholstery is a trend that’s picking up quite a lot lately. Very much loved and used by Steven Gambrel and Nate Berkus in their polished and sophisticated interiors, it may be a trend that stays longer than usual; after all, shiny surfaces is something that is very much loved by a big majority. I personally love the look, what about you; would you use liquid leather as an upholstery option in your home?
