Giving Your Kitchen Some TLC

When it comes to the kitchen, many people regard it as the heart of the home, even if we aren’t going to be appearing on MasterChef anytime soon.  It’s a place to bake, create, get together, drink wine or coffee and help the kids with homework.  So, it’s not hard to accept the fact that sometimes it is also the room that needs some serious TLC too.  When people think kitchen makeover, they think of emptying their entire bank accounts in an effort to end up with something that should be featured in Home & Garden.  But, the truth is with some smart tips you can take your kitchen from meh to magnificent – without it costing the earth.

Out With The Clutter

We all have that room that seems to absorb the clutter from the rest of the house.  Drawers that are filled with odd items, the plastic bag cupboard, and perhaps a few baskets that once upon a time had fruit in, but now? Keychain, bits of paper and pen lids are there instead.  It’s time to tackle the clutter once and for all.  Get three large boxes:

Keep: Your kitchen essentials, all in good working order and you use daily (or at least a few times a week).

Donate: Things in good working order, but you rarely use them and would be better off with someone else.

Trash: If it’s in a drawer of junk or the basket of doom, you probably don’t need it.  Get rid of as many unnecessary things as you can.

You’ll immediately find you have more space and the room will feel a lot more together.

Cleaning Time

Once you’ve gotten rid of all the junk taking up space, it’s time to scrub it all down.  Get right into the backs of the cupboards and drawers.  This does take a little bit of time, but a deep clean in the kitchen is worth its weight in gold.  If you really hate cleaning then now is the perfect opportunity to try out a local cleaning company.  If you aren’t a big fan of a lot of chemically strong cleaners, then perhaps you’d prefer to make your own cleaners.  Simple things like bicarb and vinegar work wonders.

Update

If you were to describe your kitchen cabinet doors and countertops in a word, would that word be old? Outdated? Tiered? In need of a facelift? What about the floor?  Old worn down flooring can be detrimental in the long run, you’re much more likely to trip or fall.  It’s time to consider some updates.  For flooring, arguably the best material is hardwood flooring.  It is easy to clean, keeps for years, and if you decided to sell your home, this would be a positive point for buyers.  Cabinet doors can be painted over if you are hoping to keep the costs down, melamine paint will do the job none coat no problems.  When it comes to surfaces, getting some countertop ideas from professionals is always a good idea.  Smaller things like handles can be updated relatively easy and can bring some touches of elegance depending on what you choose.
